New Year

It's Chinese New Year! So, happy new year to all those who celebrate it. We had our giant before-new-year's dinner on Saturday with my family, as well as another dinner on Sunday with my grandmother, uncles, aunts, and cousins. We're apparently having our after-new-year's dinner this Saturday with my family, and we're going to my cousin's restaurant this Sunday.

As always, my mom decorated the house to celebrate the new year. We put those red envelopes around the house. Gold is another colour used for decorations. Mandarins are also placed throughout the house. I don't know why. The only stories I know of are the chicken story and the potato-family story. Basically, chicken needs to be eaten every year. Apparently, if the chicken head is facing you at a business dinner, then it means your boss is firing you. The one fired also gets served the best part of the chicken. Another dish that needs to be served every year is like...some potato-esqe dish. I'm not even exactly sure what it is, but the main component of the dish is a vegetable from the same family as the potato. I don't know the name, but it's shaped like a ball with a long stem from the middle. It's exactly as it sounds. It's suppose to be a penis, and it signifies hope for...giving birth to a boy, not a girl lmao. My dad likes to tell us both stories every year.

A TY dragon with a red envelope. That dragon was from 12 years ago. I remember it was such a big deal back in 2000. I guess because it was the new millenium.

My mom also hung some red on the ceiling in the living room.

More on plants.

Our kitchen table. More red envelopes, and we had to lay out a tray of sweets. On new year, everyone is suppose to eat something sweet. I forgot to eat a sweet, and my mom freaked out and immediately told me to pick a sweet off the tray.
